Remembering Dick Bauer (1939 – 2025)

The Steamboaters are saddened to share that long-time member and past president Richard “Dick” Bauer passed away peacefully on August 17, 2025, at the age of 86.

Born in Eugene, Dick graduated from St. Francis High School, studied diesel mechanics at Eugene Vocational School, and served two years in the Army. He went on to work more than 30 years for Lane County Public Works before retiring, and continued part-time in the auto industry.

For over three decades, Dick was deeply committed to the North Umpqua. He served on the boards of both the Steamboaters and The North Umpqua Foundation, including terms as president. During that time, he helped organize opposition to damaging hydropower proposals at Winchester Dam and pushed for regulations that protected wild fish, including the first summer ban on weighted flies. He was known for his willingness to challenge agencies when needed, always with the goal of putting the river and fishery first.

Dick was an avid fly fisher who also loved the Metolius River and annual trips to Yellowstone. Outside of fishing, he enjoyed photography and gardening, but above all cherished his family. He is remembered as a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, and as a determined and effective advocate for the waters he loved.

His commitment to conservation and his love for the North Umpqua leave a lasting legacy.
